Ivan Misner - BNI founder - The world's largest business networking and business referral organization

Q1. How did your career journey start? Or Who / What inspired you to start this business / Entrepreneurship?

I would like to tell you that I had a vision of an international company with thousands groups on every populated continent of the world, but the truth is that I was looking for referrals for my consulting business and I started a group that was focused on building strong relationships in an environment of accountability.  Soon after I started the first group, someone came to me and asked if I would help them open another group.  Since the organization only takes one person per profession in a chapter, I told her yes and we started a second group.  People came to that second group who asked if I’d help them open a third and then a fourth and so on.  After one year, we opened 20 groups throughout Southern California.  BNI became a great example of “necessity being the mother of invention.”  What I discovered in that first year is that business people want referrals but they don’t know how to systematically generate them.  We don’t teach this in colleges and universities anywhere in the world.  What we did was help them generate referrals in a structured, positive, supportive environment and it took off.

Q2. Kindly share some information about your Business, products and services here.

BNI is a referral marketing program that allows one person per profession to join a chapter.  The primary purpose of each group is to pass referrals amongst the members.  Last year, BNI members passed over 7.7 million referrals to each other and generated more than $9.3 billion (USD) in business for our members.

Q3. What kind of challenges did you face while starting/doing business?

I discovered early on that people, like water, tend to seek the path of least resistance.  They tend to want to do what is easiest, not what is best.  The truth is that the “secret to success, without hard work, is still a secret!”

My challenge early on was to create a system and process which I could prove worked if people followed it.  Creating that process and fine-tuning it took several years.

Q4. Do share with our readers about your discovery period when you were facing difficulties in your business?

I have found that during challenging times, the key was to get as much collaboration and engagement as possible with the stakeholders of the organization.  From the early days of the company, I created advisory boards made up of clients (members), Franchisees, (Executive Directors), Master Franchisees (National Directors) and outside advisors.  These boards have been instrumental in helping navigate through challenges over the last 32 years.

Q5. Share with our readers about your experiment period after the discovery period?

We actually incorporated an “experimental program” within the framework of the company very early on.  When someone came up with what we thought was a good idea, we would test in a structured way.  If it worked well locally, we expanded the concept to a few approved regions to test it further.  If that worked well, we then incorporated the concept world-wide.  We found that this “structured experimentation” was a great way to test out new and innovative ideas.

Q6. What are your future plans? Or now what is your vision for next five years?

I believe an entrepreneur is either working in the their flame or working in their wax.  When they are working in their flame, they are on fire.  They’re excited about what they are doing and it shows in their voice and their actions.  This is the part of the business they love and it is apparent in their actions.   When they are working in their wax, their energy is being drained.  They are tired of what they are doing and that also shows in their voice and their actions.  This is the part of the business they have grown to dislike and it shows as well.
I have spent many years working towards being in a position that I spend almost all of my time working in my flame and not in my wax.  For me, that means spending almost all of my time writing about business and networking as well as doing interviews and speaking engagements on these topics.  My goal is to continue to do that with the company for a long-time to come.

Q7. How would you advice/suggest new entrepreneurs who want to start & sustain in business?

I think the biggest mistake that new entrepreneurs make is to continually chase bright shiny objects.  That is, they constantly chase some new idea without really investigating it thoroughly.  If you want to be successful in business, I believe you need to do six things a thousand times, not a thousand things six times.  Use trusted mentors and advisors to help you select the “right” six things.  Then do it over and over and over again.

I was lucky enough not to face any difficulties except to make myself continuously be with  the thought of  ‘Keep Going, no matter what‘ The moment we stop thinking it is not going to happen, you loose the battle.

Whatever the mind can conceive ,believe or dream , it can achieve provided the zeal to do remains.

Q5. Share with our readers about your experiment period after the discovery period?

When I initially started to paint , I was very much confused as to how to go about selling the paintings.

For which I took advice of my teacher and then the journey started with painting exhibitions .
For my Music field , it is  fun all the way . It  is my work cum stress buster.

Q6. What are your future plans? Or now what is your vision for next five years?

Vision for next five years would be to approach hospitals, companies, hotels  and keep colorful vibrant positive feel paintings in all the rooms .

Approach companies and make them  understand the need of hour; Talk without cell phones ,smile without selfies  can happen if there are interactive music sessions in companies which can act as a stress buster for the employees. It is high time companies start planning for the betterment of employees giving them a chance to have fun too along with work which in turn would benefit the company itself as a whole.

Q7. How would you advice/suggest new entrepreneurs who want to start & sustain in business?

One thing to be kept in mind is always be positive . The price of success is hard work, dedication, focus  and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand. Never loose focus. Never think that you can’t do something. Instead find ways to how to go about doing it.

Mangat Singh Dhiman an Indian Entrepreneur from UK

Q1. How did your career journey start? Or Who/What inspired you to start this business/ entrepreneurship?

After MCA, MPhil in Computer Science from India I went to UK for higher education in 2009. My younger brother's close friend from Lincolnshire UK, Mr Mehan encouraged me to help local businesses by making their website in an interactive way. He personally introduced me to local business owners in his circle with an intention to help them for their web requirements. With the support of my younger brother who is a national award winning animator in India and my parents I started this company, AniWebDesigns, in April 2009.

Q2. Kindly share some information about your Business, products and services here.

My company is mainly into designing websites. Company not only design custom websites but it help businesses to bring traffic on them as well. Having digital marketing team, company make it guide and explain strategy to client and then build its reputation on internet. Company do Logo Design, Graphic Design, Webdesign, CMS and e-Commerce websites, Domain and Hosting, Search Engine Optimization.

Q3. What kind of challenges did you face while starting/doing business?

I consider challenge as chance to learn something new in an alternative way. Major challenge and plus point in my business is to guide business owners about websites. From starting days of business my intention was to give them a complete solution to stay on google first page not just a website. Website is of no-use if it is not generating sale or inquiries. When we say BusinessOwner that means s/he is non-technical ( majorly ) so to guide him her and explain technicalities is a major challenge, it is productive as well on the same time because you as a resource person who is enlightening someone. By explaining technical feasibility of business concept business-brain can think 10 times towards goal that means me and client working towards mutual growth.

Q4. Do share with our readers about your discovery period when you were facing difficulties in your business?

After meeting first two clients in Derby and Loughborough city, I got a feeling that I not only have to design/redesign websites but also have to educate them about websites, comparison of different technologies terminologies. In a short span of time I developed a gesture of myself as a resource person and more precisely one-stop-shop for their all kind of web related queries and requirements. It make me feel really good that my technical skills are being utilized for someone's benefit. I do IT consulting Free of Cost so that Business Owners can think of business not about technicalities. After every first meeting/call with new client my ending line always is "Now you don't think of technical aspect, I will make it happen, you just think of business concept and development".

Q5. Share with our readers about your experiment period after the discovery period?

From time to time I met clients, even their projects gone live, and published blogs to enlighten technicalities, so that business-brain do not feel insecure/uneducated towards new web trends. In UK I also delivered many presentations to group of businesses on breakfast and lunch 4networking.biz meetings on Responsive websites in 2013-2014.

My company have delivered more than 1500 websites in last 7 years, my vision for next five years is to make my present and upcoming clients business grow. Every business owner have a business concept and it can grow with the help of interactive website, graphic brochures, social media engagement through digital marketing. I want to stand affirm with my clients on every of their website and digital marketing requirement.

Q7. How would you advice/suggest new entrepreneurs who want to start & sustain in business?

If you have a plan B, its because you don't believe in your plan A. That implies you wasted your precious time on plan A. Don't waste your time, if something is in your mind explore it, research about it and get it done. Don't run for money, run for head in rupee coin. If you will work ( that means Head-side ) money ( that means Rupee-side ) will run along. Nobody can separate Head from Rupee in a coin. If you will run for money then balance will be out and coin will fall flat. Flatten coin can't run only balanced coin can run. Make it run as-much-as-fast-you-want-to Through your Consistent efforts.
