Arun Chitlangia - TRAINING TREE

Q1. How did your career journey start? Or Who/What inspired you to start this business/ entrepreneurship?

Being the eldest son in a marwadi family, having established business of Ball Bearings, own office and residence, it was written on the wall that I am expected to join my father’s business. I observed that Illiterate and uneducated traders and brokers earned more than me and my education was not used there, so I wanted to do something different. I putted up a SSI unit at Hyderabad. Now, this was other extreme. I could not manage it and had to wind up.

I tried my hands at share market as sub-broker, ad agency, Jobs at big and few smaller companies, Share Recovery Agent, but the job satisfaction was missing.

At Lions Club, my public speaking ability was appreciated. In a SWOT analysis this was emphasized and I started thinking - how to use this ability or strength. One of the option was Training and after some hiccups I landed here.

Q2. Kindly share some information about your Business, products and services here.

Once I got any assignment, it was treated at par irrespective of the fee. The effort
was to give maximum value to the customer. Exceeding Customer Expectation was my mantra, and it worked. Even now, I am growing mainly due to this one single factor.

  • Before starting any business learn the financial side of the business as it can help you in taking risk, since without risk you cannot do any business.
  • Be ready to accept challenges & focus on what needs to be done rather than why it needs to be done.
  • In difficult times, do a product research and work on it, as it can be a source of inspiration & future plan to move ahead.
  • Don’t get involved in only one product instead work on different product / areas of business.
  • Create a quality product & then start your marketing first with people whom you know better & ask for their feedback.
  • Improvise on your product every 3 months..

Amazing David, Illusionist from India

Q1. How did your career journey start? Or Who/What inspired you to start this business/ entrepreneurship?

From my later school days, the time when everyone my age was planning to take up Computer programming or Chartered Accountancy, I was fascinated by the thought of turning my hobby in to a full time profession. After completing my Standard XII examinations, I took up a job as a customer service executive for a British telephone company since I needed to financially support my family. I would say I did pretty well but my heart and dreams were fixed on becoming a fulltime showman. I was lucky enough to have managers who were kind enough to grant me leave and the occasional half-day whenever a performance came up. Still, it was difficult to cope up with both careers at the same time.

I could feel my performance quality dropping. After 6 months on the job, it seemed the
end client and the call centre started having some disagreements and overnight, the client shifted the process over to another call centre. A few of the newer employees including myself were asked to leave the process. This turned out to be the Catalyst to start my full time performing career and within a month, eighteen year old Amazing David had landed a contract performing in schools for one of India’s leading Newspapers.

Q2. Kindly share some information about your Business, products and services here.

I am an Illusionist. I perform for corporate and private events all over the world. My show is interactive and crosses the threshold between the audience and performer and blurs the line between what we understand and what is unreal. Magic is an intellectually stimulating art form and my performances not only entertain but also leave the audiences thinking. I also design special illusion presentations for clients to launch products or concepts and also bring out corporate messages. I am also working on a new show termed ‘Psychillusions’ that combines human psychology with magic and illusions.

Q3. What kind of challenges did you face while starting/doing business?

People are programmed to believe that you cannot be a professional entertainer in India. There is “no-scope”. In fact words of discouragement still flow in till this day. As a country, India is yet to understand the value of this form of entertainment. A magician is often thought of as a man in a glittery ill fitting coat and hat pulling out paper flowers from a tin can at a children birthday party. Or people think it is a form of the dark arts, Black magic to be precise.

The biggest challenge was to show people the true potential of a good Illusionist... And i think i am doing that... one show at a time.

Q4. Do share with our readers about your discovery period when you were facing difficulties in your business?

They say in “ Show Business “ , Business is the bigger word ! Balancing Show and business has always been the difficult part. I am still learning !!

Q5. Share with our readers about your experiment period after the discovery period?

What I do is Creatively Stimulating. I am always on the look out for new ways to enthral my audience. I keep experimenting with new effects, humour and presentations. I am working on new shows and ideas all the time and I love doing that. I don’t think my “experiment period” will ever end !

Q6. What are your future plans? Or now what is your vision for next five years?

I am working towards a modern theatrical magic production and hope to launch it in the next few years and tour the world with it. Also I hope to have a television series on the art. On a more personal front, I would like to do something to uplift traditional Indian street magicians and performers. India has a rich heritage of street performers who no one knows about and hence their tribes are dying out.

Q7. How would you advice/suggest new entrepreneurs who want to start & sustain in business?

It takes courage to take the first plunge, but once you do that, you will learn to fly. Believing in yourself and your efforts is the key. .

And also my advice to everyone, not just budding entrepreneurs is a quote from Roald Dhal..

“ Always believe in a little magic.. Magic is believing in Yourself and if you can do that you can make anything happen. Don’t wait for that magic moment. Go out and make your own magic. For those who don’t believe in magic... shall never find it..”

Barry Maher - American Speaker, Author on Leadership, Communication, Management & Sales

Q1. How did your career journey start? Or Who/What inspired you to start this business/ entrepreneurship?

I started out to be a novelist. But my novels quickly hit worst-seller status. One even made the UPI’s Ten Most Underrated List for that year, along with a Meryl Streep movie about a dingo that ate a baby.

I was supporting myself with a business career while waiting to achieve best seller status (along of course with wealth, fame and beautiful lovers). Then, about 20 years ago, my agent suggested I write a business book. Which I did. I quickly found myself in the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times and literally hundreds of other publications. One day the phone rang and the voice on the other end asked me if I’d speak at their convention. For a one hour keynote, she offered a fee that was over a third of the advance I’d gotten on the book. Did it. Loved it.

Q2. Kindly share some information about your Business, products and services here.

I’m a speaker and a trainer with an expertise in communication, leadership, management and sales. I do everything from keynote presentations to workshops and seminars to extensive trainings. Each session is thoroughly and completely tailored and customized for the individual group, and is as content-rich yet as entertaining and motivational as I can possibly make it.

Q3. What kind of challenges did you face while starting/doing business?

Operating on shoestring (and a broken one at that), I originally had to do everything myself. The thrift that made it possible for me to survive and then thrive in the beginning, quickly became a hindrance when I delayed hiring people who could do any number of specific tasks easier, cheaper and far better than I could.

Q4. Do share with our readers about your discovery period when you were facing difficulties in your business?

Quite simply I was getting overwhelmed. I knew that I couldn’t afford to lower the quality of my presentations or my business would quickly stop growing or even start to retreat. So I was working 7 days a week as many as 16 hours a day. And, as a speaker, I was doing all that traveling as well. Though I’ve always loved what I do, it certainly became much harder to enjoy it during this period. I knew I had to get help but I also knew that I didn’t really have time to train them and still get everything done that needed to be done.

Fortunately, I took the time to find just the right person and my first hire turned out to be one of my very best ever. I won’t say he trained himself but he was so self-directed and so smart, that he came about as close as anyone could to training himself.

Q5. Share with our readers about your experiment period after the discovery period?

As a speaker, I’ve had to work out just what topics my market needed. Then each topic has to be developed then honed over the years to deliver just what our client needs. We never stop perfecting them. Since each session is so thoroughly customized for the particular group, we’re constantly adding new material that may ultimately work for other clients down the line as well.

Beyond that, we’re constantly working to improve our systems as well. So in a sense, my experiment period has never ended and hopefully it never will

Q6. What are your future plans? Or now what is your vision for next five years?

The company has been very successful but that doesn’t mean I don’t want to continue to improve. Adding more client and making sure that each and every presentation delivers exactly what the client needs, and more.

Q7. How would you advice/suggest new entrepreneurs who want to start & sustain in business?

Having been involved in a number of start-ups as everything from a founder to a consultant, there here are some of the biggest mistakes I've made and seen, and what I learned from them.

1) Overpaying for office space or luxurious appointments that have absolutely no impact on customers. I've watched companies whose customers never see their offices waste hundreds of thousands of precious capital remodeling old warehouses and buying the latest and coolest office furniture, when they should have been developing their business in a garage someplace.

2) Eating your seed corn. This year's profit isn't all profit, much of it should be plowed back into the business. And make sure you have a cash reserve for when times get tough again, which they will sooner or later.

3) Overpay for "expert" leadership. When you decide to bring in help to run the business don't be overly impressed by big name experience and huge salaries listed on their resume. First check them out every way you can to make sure the person is everything they claim to be (and, if so, why did their last employer let such a wonder escape). And even if they are, will that expertise translate to your business: a successful executive at Boeing at may crash and burn disastrously working in a start-up without the kind of resource that were used to previously.

Preeti Subberwal - Transformational Coach, Founding Director at Thoughtful Engagement

Q1. How did your career journey start? Or Who/What inspired you to start this business/entrepreneurship?

As long as I can remember, I was inclined towards anything that could make a difference in the quality of our life. However, I had never considered taking up coaching or training as a profession. A series of triggers started happening since the year 2010 to make me realize the purpose of my life. I got various messages from the universe in many forms and it made me reflect deeply on my profession at that time (I was a Senior Manager in a Telecom Software company).

I strongly believe in the holistic approach to well-being and leadership that promotes mind, body and spirit unification. My quest in this lifetime is how I can accelerate my evolutionary growth and work towards self-mastery in all the four dimensions (physical, mental, emotional and spiritual) in a way that I inspire and support others to do so. With this vision, I quit my job and founded my company – ‘Thoughtful Engagement’ - to provide a platform to people who are willing to thoughtfully engage with people at large to make a positive difference in their life.

Though I took a lot of detours between realizing my inner calling and pursuing coaching as a career, ultimately, it has brought me the personal and professional fulfilment that is beyond words can express.

Q2. Kindly share some information about your Business, products and services here.

Thoughtful Engagement facilitates transformational leadership in individuals and organizations through powerful workshops, seminars and coaching programs in the following areas:

• Personal Development and Empowerment

• Sales, Persuasion and Influence

• Leadership and Managerial Excellence

• Collaboration and Interpersonal Effectiveness

• Stress Management and Work-life Balance

• Holistic Pregnancy and Well-being

Our mission is to illuminate the lives of people in a way that they are empowered to attain their next level of success, happiness and fulfilment in their lives.

Q3. What kind of challenges did you face while starting/doing business?

I was preparing myself for a few years before I finally set up my own venture. I got some experience in coaching and training, did some international certifications and planned the finances accordingly. No matter how much you prepare yourself, entrepreneurship is much tougher than you can imagine. There are times when you feel so overwhelmed and under-prepared that you tend to forget why you even embarked on this journey in the first place.

For creating a profitable and sustainable business, I realized that many things need to be taken care of like - getting my company registered, raising the capital for my startup, forming my team and finding my alliance partners, lead generation, converting leads into business, marketing my services, working on my online presence, understanding the competition, wring and publishing my book and then there are always some unforeseen business challenges and expenses also.

The list is endless and it takes a lot of time and efforts to understand the workings of a new industry and to have your first few customers in place.

Q4. Do share with our readers about your discovery period when you were facing difficulties in your business?

Your determination is tested at every step and it becomes difficult to stay focused when you face one challenge after the other. However, if you are in touch with your source of inspiration, it gives you the inner strength to persevere. I realized that I need to understand the pain points of my prospects and customers and focus on how I can create enormous value for them. And instead of seeking support outside, I had to be in the trenches myself to determine what steps I need to take to hit profitability.

I took up every opportunity with zeal that came on my way whether it was a book reading session, speaking, or a small workshop opportunity. Instead of getting bogged down by disappointments in the early months, I kept renewing my determination with even a greater force and focussed on the learnings.

Q5. Share with our readers about your experiment period after the discovery period?

I was able to launch two world class websites, trademarked my own coaching model, collaborated with a few people with vast experience in this industry and successfully launched the first designer self-help book of India – ‘Life Mantras by a Life Coach’.

I started conducting various types of workshops in corporates with a ‘Holistic Leadership’ theme. I got overwhelming feedback from my clients and the participants of my corporate workshops and the word of mouth started generating more work. I didn’t restrict myself to corporates and got the training opportunities in government and public sector organizations. I also tied up with some wellness centres and hospitals for coaching their patients on psychological and spiritual aspects.

I became one of the pioneers in India as a Holistic Pregnancy coach, and this is something very close to my heart. I feel, the kind of transformation, I want to bring in the society, has to be started from the womb itself.

Q6. What are your future plans? Or now what is your vision for next five years?

I plan to expand overseas as a coach and intend to collaborate with some great international leaders in this industry. As a Holistic Leadership Coach, I will continue to support organizations in accelerating their leadership development and elevating their performance and productivity.

And as a Holistic pregnancy coach, I will tie up with various hospitals and clinics. I will continue to support women in making them realize and embrace their missions as expecting mothers so that they take complete responsibility of the souls entrusted to their care.

I am passionately committed to write many self-mastery books in the times to come. I will also be launching my DVDs and mobile apps to create immense value for the people across the world.

Q7. How would you advice/suggest new entrepreneurs who want to start & sustain in business?

My advice to the new entrepreneurs would be to be true to your vision, values and beliefs no matter how many hardships that you face. Keep upgrading your mindset, skillset and toolset so that you are able to constantly improve the quality of your deliverables. Focus more on building your credibility than on your visibility.

And always trust your gut feeling and seek the answers inside instead of believing what other people tell you about what works and what doesn’t work in business.

Kalyani Kamble - Transform to Triumph

Q1. How did your career journey start? Or who/what inspired you to start this business / entrepreneurship?

Contrary to common belief, there was never a single distinct point in my professional career which made me realize that I had to change my stream of operations. With an MBA in Human Resources and a decade of training experience, I was set in my ways.

However, there was always a sense of impending change looming over me at all points in my career as I knew that my knack to observe human behavior, to see untapped potentials within them would someday manifest itself into something huge. This gestation period of something culminating of my habits was my inspiration to alter my career path and do something that made me joyous! Co-fouding Vinspire – an unequaled knowledge sharing platform which gets like minded people and eager learners on the same stage was a by-product of this inspired career alteration.

Q2. Kindly share some information about your business, products and services here.

“It is not what you are underneath, but what you do, that defines you!” This quote has never failed to amaze me and in its wake, it has often made me realize that we are all living dual lives, oblivious to who we are. The products and services catered by Image Impetus tries to bridge this gap between dual lives and thereby, bringing to the fore, who you really are as a person.

So, at Image Impetus we offer our services to individuals as well as corporate and tend to every minute detail of their personality, right from evaluating their body and face shape to their wardrobes to the etiquette and body language to the communication prowess and maximizing their personal style and lifestyle statements. Similarly for our corporate clientele, we arrange various forms of workshops for their employees,
imparting knowledge about their appearance, communication, and etiquette in general. In addition, we also have a one on one counseling session for them to help them cross any bridge too difficult.

Q3. What kind of challenges did you face while starting / doing business?

The word challenge reminds me of this beautiful line by Helen Keller and I quote. “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all.” This quote helped me channelize the inner fears about the foreseeable challenges of business. The one thought that kept me going on this path was that if I wasn't prepared to tackle and win over my own demons, there was no way I could have helped anybody else. And sustaining yourself in this business by being a hypocrite was not an option.

So i had to unlearn all that I had learnt over a period of time, and re-learn so many aspects of the human psyche, dealing with emotions, learning the traits of business and gradually bringing myself to a point where I could be an inspirational example for all those who walked into my office.

Q4. Do share with our readers about your discovery period when you were facing difficulties in your business?

My experience suggests that venturing into the unknown presents challenges on a more personal level than professional. Image management is one of the most untapped streams of business and to make a living in it meant that my personal stance had to be more thorough and crystal so that I could connect with my clientele on a much deeper level. This realization saw me take various forms of training and coaching to fine tune my natural instincts and subsequently, hone it in a way that would help as many individuals as I possibly could.

Q5. Share with our readers about your experiment period after the discovery period?

As I mentioned earlier, there was a lot unlearning that had to be done, in order to re-learn the basics. This experimentation period has been one of the most challenging and fruitful periods of my life as it was firmly supported by my thought process that I could not be an inspiration and of help to anyone unless I was setting the right example for my clientele.

It was in this period that I amassed knowledge and experience from all possible quarters, started implementing them in places and situations I deemed fit and improved my personal self to become successful professionally.

Q6. What are your future plans? Or what is your vision for the next five years?

The whole focus of Image Impetus has been to extend a hand to individuals who are dealing with life’s challenges, seemingly back-footed.

To create an opportunity for these individuals to be toe-to-toe with life is our vision and reaching out to as many individuals as we can is our mission. So I see myself doing this for the next five years and hopefully, do a small part to spread a certain sense of happiness around.

Q7. How would you advice / suggest new entrepreneurs who want to start and sustain in business?

Being an eternal student of a classroom called life, my advice to fellow entrepreneurs, in general and specially to those who wish to get into Image management would be to be more observant of everything that surrounds you. Pick up on little fragments of information, muster the strength to seek, develop your skills, practice what you preach and don’t settle for anything less than perfection.

Semira Khaleeli Lall - Professional Image Coach and NLP Practitioner from Mumbai, India

Q1. How did your career journey start? Or Who/What inspired you to start this business/ entrepreneurship?

Over the last 18 years spent in Hospitality Sales & Marketing, I have met and worked with many talented and highly qualified people whose image did not do them justice. In fact, it was a negative and was detrimental to their growth and success.

Alongwith my experience; training sales teams in sales, soft skills and as a Licensed NLP Practitioner I realised I could use my skills to coach and empower people by working on internal/ external alignment to project a confident, positive image.

Q2. Kindly share some information about your Business, products and services here.

As a professional Image Coach and NLP Practitioner I coach individuals and companies to take their image to the next level. The systematic coaching is customized to impact the way they are perceived by others by evaluating the positive and negative perceptions present, and determine the best way to enhance the positive aspects.

NLP techniques are an integral factor in my group training and personal coaching.

Q3. What kind of challenges did you face while starting/doing business?

I think the greatest challenge was and continues to be awareness of the benefits of Image Management for companies and individuals.

In fact, most people I meet have preconceived notions of this term. The challenge is overcoming the unwillingness of highly placed individuals to open their minds to the entire picture that Image Management embraces

I get asked this question very often - So who needs image management ?

Everyone ! College students looking to get their first job. Housewives who want to appear more assertive and confident. Corporate professionals looking to take the next step in their career.

Companies wanting to enhance their company image through their sales teams or other
representatives in the public eye.

Corporations grooming the next generation of leaders and senior managers. There are a many talented people out there but some just do better than others because the perception of them is more positive so they tend to succeed faster and easily.

Most people mistakenly assume Image Management as Fashion Styling or Makeovers and it’s a continuous process to build the awareness that Image Management is internal/ external alignment so we project the positive aspects of our personality.

For a company their brand image or brand personality is reflected by the Image of their employees. For an individual their Image is their Personal Brand.

Q4. Do share with our readers about your discovery period when you were facing difficulties in your business?

Image Management encompasses so many aspects and the benefits of it are worth the investment. You are investing in yourself as an individual or in your own brand personality as a company.

As I mentioned earlier, the biggest challenge was overcoming preconceived notions and
building mindsets.

However, once my clients understood the value of taking their image to the next level, word of mouth assisted in growing my profile and customers.

Q5. Share with our readers about your experiment period after the discovery period?

Each client is unique whether they are an individual or a company so customisation is the key to deliver effectively. The clients goals are crucial to development and implementation of coaching effectively.

No two clients are alike, which is why we individually tailor plans to our clients. We take the time to learn our client’s need, goals, and concerns, and develop each plan around them. We coach our clients how to address their initial concerns while showing them how to achieve long term success. Whether you’re a college student looking to get ahead in today’s job market, or a company looking to hone their professional image to attract clients, Imagenation is committed to helping you achieve your goals.

Q6. What are your future plans? Or now what is your vision for next five years?

We are already present in 2 cities (Kolkata and Mumbai) and I am working towards increasing the footprint in these 2 markets. I am confident that in the next 5 years we will have a significant presence in the metro cities

Q7. How would you advice/suggest new entrepreneurs who want to start &sustain in business?

Self belief is a very important aspect as you are your own best advocate. The belief that you are the best person for a job or project and have the ability to meet any challenge turns problems into opportunities. The key is to embrace the situation and seek an opportunity or solution to every challenge that comes your way.

Chetna Mehrotra - Image Expression Artist, a Drama Based Learning Facilitator, a Creative Movement Artist

Q1. How did your career journey start? Or Who/What inspired you to start this business/ entrepreneurship?

I am Chetna, an Image Expression Artist, a Drama Based Learning Facilitator, a Creative Movement Artist (practicing), and a mom of a 10 year old.

I was born and raised in the beautiful valley of DehraDun. Fresh air, cold mountains, genuine people and a community culture have been an intrinsic part of my growing up years.

My parents always had a progressive mindset. I could do a javelin throw, present the “thodas” and ‘aamad” of Kathak, perform at contests, run relays and lead my school as a council member. I didn’t live in “stereotypes”!

The stint at National School of Drama, New Delhi as a TIE student made me realize the power and faith in “me”, while I also explored the domain of “performance”!

Hence training and coaching as a career, added a dimension to this love for “acting” and “discovery”. And the love for colors, fashion (external) and spiritual guidance (internal) comes from my mother. Combining these two, I formed “Chetna Mehrotra Image Consultancy”.

Now, I work as a presenter, coach & a consultant, specializing in appearance, behavior, communications, and work with individuals, organizations & educational institutes.

Q2. Kindly share some information about your Business, products and services here.

Under the umbrella of my consultancy firm, I work with organisations, schools, and
universities in the domain of Like Skills, Behavioural skills, and Image expression and therapy.

I create learning spaces through the tools of art, like drama, theatre, art therapy, dance in storytelling etc.

I conduct workshops on Gender Vulnerability and Gender Inclusion at Workplace, Wardrobe Management, Professional Etiquette, Body Language & Emotions, Art of Public Speaking, Communication Effectiveness, Trust-Empathy, Exploring Image “inside-out”, Voice & Diction, etc

I work with schools in the space of Drama Therapy. I use tools of Drama and Theatre as an active engagement approach to learn Life Skills

Q3.What kind of challenges did you face while starting/doing business?

“The walk on your own path is never sans obstacles”. I did encounter obstacles and they haven’t disappeared. Every challenge is an another learning.

In an entrepreneurship, there are no Saturdays and Sundays. You have to constantly keep networking, strategize to build your firm, looks at fresh business, upgrade your skills etc.

Though, it is energizing, yet at times muddling!

So, I do take constant breaks to “neutralize” myself. It could be going away for few days or giving myself the luxury of attending workshops or watching a play! I also de-clutter through spiritual healing.

I come back with a clean slate and fresh perspectives!

Q4. Do share with our readers about your discovery period when you were facing difficulties in your business?

As I added “Image Management” as a part of my work-box, I trained and coached individuals, corporate professionals, teachers, children, home-makers, and actors. Through this journey, I gradually realised that every being that is present in a workshop room has a unique “image”. They play a role of a boss, a team leader, a mother-who-is-also-a-marketing head, a father-who-is-also-a doctor, a new-confused mother-who-wants-to-work-again, homemaker-who gets-troubled-by-a jealous-neighbor, a-child-who-drops-other’s-tiffin-at-school-because-she-wants-to-seek-attention and more.

Some portions of their image is expressed, some unexpressed. Sometimes, a part of their image is not talked about and at times, a part of their image needs attention and appreciation.

I, for sure, coach them on external “image management” tools; however, to understand and make them “emotionally” well equipped to project an “emotional and social literate” image, it is important to bring in tools which un-layer their emotional baggage and make them feel themselves.

Therefore, I introduced “Art Forms” in Image Management workshops. I used tools like Drama Based Learning, Theatre-in-Reflection, Creative Movement, Dance Drama-in-Storytelling, and Expression Through Arts.

I am India’s first Image Consultant to have evolved Image Management modules and incorporated these new approaches. And yes, it has yielded some revealing results.

Q5. Share with our readers about your experiment period after the discovery period?

So, after my discovery period, I employed these Art Forms in various training situations.

Art Forms have special ability to make people express their innermost fears, wishes, feelings, or doubts. Expression through Arts is an effective process, wherein people and clients have divulged the innermost state of mind and heart and confessed to some unsaid feelings. A woman who is not confident about her “image”, in the first instance would only talk about how she wants to look slim or learn to dress up gracefully. Through Arts Expression process, it is revealed later that there is some neighbour in the apartment who has always taunted her for not being able to talk well.

And there goes the “self-image” of this woman.

Drama based learning is a powerful tool to build sessions like Trust and Empathy, combining it with Creative Movement. Through facilitated movement based exercises, participants bond, interact and shed their inhibitions. Specific drama based exercises make them experience emotions and they learn to empathize and accept other’s in their sphere.

At an interesting session on image of women and men at workplaces, in a session called “Gender Vulnerability”, I employed “Dance Drama-in-storytelling”. A piece of dance drama act, followed by a facilitation from the audience, got everyone interacting and talking about they feel for the gender at their workplaces. A sales head at this workshop said at the send of the workshop,

“I would from now on not only be more sensitive towards women employees, but from today onwards I would understand what my wife goes through at her workplace”. What an example of empathy!

Q6. What are your future plans? Or now what is your vision for next five years?

I work with children in schools. I am closely witnessing everyday what they encounter. I wish to create and establish a school which works on the passion areas of each student. I want to introduce concepts of Drama, Theatre, Arts, and other experiential forms of learning.

So, if a child wants to learn programming and wants to develop games, she/he can learn this through an integrated curriculum that educates him on knowledge on science, computers, history of that subject etc.

What a happy world will that be!

Q7. How would you advice/suggest new entrepreneurs who want to start & sustain in business?

I would say, learn the trade, apply it, explore your failures, accept them and then recharge double!

So not limit yourself! This is a career with immense opportunity to be imaginative and creative.

Do not hold back that “idea’ there. Get it out and show up!

Keep re-inventing! People will re-invent, don’t apply all what you learnt five years ago. Add something new.

Greeshma Thampi - Founder of Avancé Image Management

1. How did your career journey start? Or Who/What inspired you to start this business/ entrepreneurship?

Post my MBA, I was working as Human Resources Manager with an IT company. I was happy with my career, but I realized that I was unable to exploit my potential within a set of listed job responsibilities. As a student of management, I always wanted to start my own business.

The idea of Image Management struck the right cord. I realised instantly that this was my true calling. It was certainly a huge turning point in my life. It was a career which was the perfect amalgamation of my skills and interest, providing the creativity, flexibility and challenges of entrepreneurship.

2. Kindly share some information about your Business, products and services here.

In the words of Dale Carnegie, “There are four ways, and only four ways, in which we have contact with the world. We are evaluated and classified by these four contacts:  What we do, How we look, What we say and How we say it”

Thus Image Management provides a framework addressing aspects like clothing, communication skills, grooming practices, etiquette, body language and behavioural skills. These elements contribute towards creating the right image for each role that one undertakes in their professional, social and personal life.

My company, Avancé  Image Management specialises in Corporate Training and Coaching. We have a clientele of the top organisations from industry verticals like Banking & Finance, Manufacturing, Education, Media, IT and Consulting. We have conducted programs for brands like Oberoi, Femina, Religare, Thermax to name a few.

3. What kind of challenges did you face while starting/doing business?

Being the first mover in any industry has its own set of challenges and opportunities. I was well aware that Image Consulting is a niche and developing industry in India. But I wanted to have the first mover advantage. The biggest challenge was educating people about the importance of this concept. However, this is also a great opportunity as we have introduced this concept for the first time in various organisations.

4. Do share with our readers about your discovery period when you were facing difficulties in your business?

As mentioned above, being a new industry, there were no benchmarks or rules for success. I have experimented with various formats of training & coaching as well as marketing the services. We learn from every experience and try to get better.

5. Share with our readers about your experiment period after the discovery period?

Through my initial experience, I realised Image Management for Corporates is a great offering. This allowed me to leverage my education and corporate experience. This is where our focus lies today as an organisation.

6. What are your future plans? Or now what is your vision for the next five years?

I will be focussing on providing services to Corporates in various industries on Image Management and Soft Skills. We have a consultative approach and will be playing a strong role in the growth story of various organisations.

7. How would you advice/suggest new entrepreneurs who want to start & sustain in business?

There are 3 components to be a successful entrepreneur i.e. 3 Ps – Passion, People and Perseverance.

When one gets into entrepreneurship, one needs to be extremely passionate about their line of business. This is absolutely essential for success.
One also needs to be people oriented so as to be able to coach, counsel and communicate with people.

One needs to have perseverance and should not be afraid of taking risks. Entrepreneurship is all about facing challenges, but how one learns from these experiences and keep going ahead, is what sets one apart.

Sean Smith - Transformational Coach from America

Q1. How did your career journey start? Or Who/What inspired you to start this business/ entrepreneurship?

My career started out of pure passion for teaching people how to change their lives in the same way that mine was changed.  My journey began many years ago when I was nearly killed while riding my bicycle to school, as I was run over by a car traveling at over 80 kilometers per hour.  I learned that we only get one shot in life, and it can all be taken away from us at any point with no warning.  So I changed the way I saw my life, my goals, and my relationships.  But even though I had promised myself to live a life of greatness, I struggled for the next 20 years with achieving my goals.  And then in 2005, at a seminar, a life coach helped me identify and remove the biggest block to my success - a belief inside me that was limiting my ability to achieve.  After that point, I simply wanted to share what I learned with anybody who would listen.  So I started speaking to any group that would have me, and eventually my speaking and coaching career took off.

Q2. Kindly share some information about your Business, products and services here.

My company is called MVP Success Systems, Inc.  We are a transformational coaching company that helps people overcome their biggest internal and external obstacles so they can aggressively pursue their goals and dreams while living a life of passion, purpose and presence.  We have many audio programs, coaching services and seminars to serve people in their journey.

Q3. What kind of challenges did you face while starting/doing business?

The biggest challenges for me were all internal.  Mostly, it was belief in myself.  Anytime we want to grow beyond our current circumstances, that growth is very uncomfortable and causes most people to quit.  And many times I had the same urge to quit on myself and my dreams.  But what kept me going was the belief I had from my family, and knowing there are people in the world who need to hear my message.  I was able to source my strength through them, which was much more powerful than what I could get only from myself.

Q4. Do share with our readers about your discovery period when you were facing difficulties in your business?

What I realized in my darkest hours is that it's okay to be afraid.  It's okay to feel nervous.  It's okay to doubt yourself.  Not only is all of that okay, it's normal and natural in the growth process.  When I allowed myself to be an authentic human being, and gave myself permission to share my most vulnerable stories with my audiences, everything changed in a positive way for me.  Not only was my message more attractive, my work was easier to me.  I enjoyed it more and that passion showed in all that I did and still do.

Q5. Share with our readers about your experiment period after the discovery period?

Once I got over the need to be 'perfect' and allowed myself to instead be human, I was able to take risks again, just like I used to when I was a young boy.  I had stopped risking for a long period of time because I was afraid to fail.  As soon as I realized that all great accomplishments come on the other side of failure, I embraced whatever outcomes I was meant to receive.  I understood that the only way for me to create what I wanted in the world was to take action, receive the feedback openly, and adjust accordingly.  I've found that when you remove the negative emotional attachment most of us have to achievement, life gets 100 times easier.  And, as a bonus, we actually achieve way more because our self esteem is not at stake.  This is one of the biggest lessons of life I've ever learned.

Q6. What are your future plans? Or now what is your vision for next five years?

Over the next 5-10 years in my career, I am committed to expanding my platform many many times over.  For me, that includes writing many books, speaking on many stages, certifying as many life coaches as I can, and overall adding as much value to the lives of others as I know how to.

Q7. How would you advice/suggest new entrepreneurs who want to start & sustain in business?

Make sure you begin with the fundamentals of business.  Make sure you know the reasons why you're beginning your new career, because only those deep and meaningful reasons why have the power to overcome the desires to quit when the going gets a little rough (and it almost always will).  Invest in yourself by always going to personal development seminars and participating in coaching programs.  The investment in yourself will always provide the highest returns.  And make sure you hire a private coach who can help you get where you want to go, who can hold you accountable to your purpose and goals, and who can bring things out of you that you cannot bring out on your own.  Coaching is one of the most critical pieces of success, but unfortunately not very many people have a coach.

Nikita Acharya - Founder of FunBuzz India

Q1. How did your career journey start? Or Who/What inspired you to start this business/ entrepreneurship?

The idea for FunBuzz struck me in 2011 when I decided I wanted to do something productive with my time and in a subject area which interested me. I have always enjoyed being with children. It gives me an amazing sense of satisfaction and wonder at the same time - looking at their curiosity and their infinite appetite for learning. But I have also seen how schools in the current day teach children in a very rote and boring manner. By doing so, they unknowingly stifle the natural creativity and potential of quick learning in the child. That is when I realized that if learning can be made more fun and interactive, it could be much more beneficial to the child. It would build a much more solid foundation for the child’s reading, writing and learning abilities as the child grows.

I was aware of the Phonetic method of teaching while interacting with my nephews who were 3-5 years old at that time. I was attracted at this simple yet powerful method of teaching children how to read and write. Hence I decided to become more proficient in the Jolly Phonics system of teaching and got certified in the same. I started out with teaching just two kids, and within a span of three years, I now have over two hundred children who have gone through this course, with amazing degrees of success.

My father has always been a true inspiration to me from the day I graduated. I guess I was infected with his endless energy and willingness to grow. I saw him build his enterprise from scratch multiple times and that is when I realized I could do much more by starting out on my own than do a job where my impact would be limited. Combining my good rapport with children with something I enjoy doing, teaching, has ensured that I am still as charged and excited before each and every class as I was during the first class. My second inspiration is my husband whose inputs were important in building a structure to the courses and methods of teaching. His inputs, though critical sometimes, helped me a lot from the time I started out with two kids and gave me patience to grow FunBuzz to what it is now.

Q2. Kindly share some information about your Business, products and services here.

FunBuzz India is an educational enterprise which enables children between the ages of 4-8 years old in reading, writing, grammar and general knowledge. There are separate courses for each skill. Our courses are designed as a step by step journey, each building on top of the previous courses to ensure that the child builds a strong foundation. The courses which FunBuzz offers covers the entire spectrum, right from learning how to hold a pencil correctly to forming grammatically correct sentences on their own.

For example, the Junior Phonics course is the introductory course for children who are just learning to read and is the perfect starting point for children aged 3-5 years. The Senior Phonics course builds on the JP course and introduces advanced concepts to the child. We also have a Grammar module which teaches children about the states and symbols of India, about different planets as well as about oceans and continents.
Most of these courses are spread over a duration of ten months. These courses are designed in such a way that the child does not get overwhelmed at learning new things. It also gives enough practice to ingrain the concepts in their minds.

We have recently introduced flash cards to improve the child’s general knowledge on various aspects. These flash cards range from topics about the Wonders of the World, to flags of countries, as well as famous personalities. We believe this is a very ripe age to inculcate a basic sense of general knowledge in the child. Nowadays, we see parents handing their children mobile phone screens to keep them occupied. But according to us, flash cards are much more educational and productive in the long run.

Q3. What kind of challenges did you face while starting/doing business?

Getting the parents to understand the value of a long term course was one challenge I faced in the early years. In this day and age of crash courses and summer batches, people expected their children to learn to read and write within a period of two months. But since these skills form the foundation of a child’s learning, it takes time to ingrain the basics in their mind. Hence, it was important to spread the course over the period of an academic year.

Also there was a need to distinguish this holistic course from a simple tuition class. The Jolly Phonics method of teaching we use involve a more interactive way of learning than is taught typically in schools and tuitions.

Q4. Do share with our readers about your discovery period when you were facing difficulties in your business?

For me there were no clear discovery and experiment periods.

Q5. Share with our readers about your experiment period after the discovery period?

Even today, I keep discovering new things about how we can improve the services we provide. Hence I believe that discovery and experimentation are an inseparable part of entrepreneurship, be it a fledgling start-up or a well-established business.

Q6. What are your future plans? Or now what is your vision for next five years?

It will be a continuous journey of discovery, improvement and experimentation. I wish to expand my services from the Chandivali/Powai area to other parts of Mumbai. One of my long term plans would be to offer franchise opportunities for like-minded entrepreneurs who wish to make a difference in the pre-school education space.

Q7. How would you advice/suggest new entrepreneurs who want to start & sustain in business?

It is very important to truly believe in your product or service. Unless you believe that what you offer improves someone else’s life, it is difficult for others to believe in you. Listen to your gut feeling, many a time it can prove right instead of logic. Do not be afraid to make mistakes. Planning can help only to a certain extent. After a while, it is action which will convert your plans to reality. And most of all, your passion should be greater than the fortune you wish to make from your venture. That will make the difference between a business and an enterprise.

Malti Bhojwani - Professional Life Coach, Author, Facilitator, Speaker

Q1. How did your career journey start? Or Who/What inspired you to start this business/ entrepreneurship?

My personal challenges led to seeking out trainings and programs to help build self awareness. I had been through a breakdown in my marriage, financial struggles, being a young mum in Australia, it was hard. I was also really fat and unhealthy and when I started looking for ways out of my own rut, I discovered my talent and purpose was to help others do the same - that is around when the ICF was recently established and courses to become professional coaches were coming up globally.

This in turn has become the backbone of my career now, where my current focus is in professional phone coaching and in LIVE intense self-awareness and communication workshops.

I was and still am inspired by Oprah Winfrey and someday would like to have a show like hers, where I create a platform to teachers, authors, philosophers to come together and speak to an audience who trusts me.

Q2. Kindly share some information about your Business, products and services here.

Facilitator - * Intensive LIVE workshops for pretty senior employees or entrepreneurs who are looking for a deeper level of self awareness and  to hone their already good communication skills. These are usually conducted internally by corporations or for specific groups by organisations.

Professional Life Coach - * Professional Coaching packages carried out by phone/Skype usually over a period of 3 months where my clients and I design and co-create the way forward towards them achieving their goals. Personal and Professional.

Author - * Books - I have authored 4 books on self Awareness and personal growth, 1 of which has been translated into Malay - Indonesian. And developed an Audio Programs. 2 more books are to be released later this year and 2 more are scheduled for late 2015. I am in conversations for several other co-authorship's and a fiction novel as well (but that will have to wait) I also write for the TOI every week and speak to audiences all over the world.

Q3. What kind of challenges did you face while starting/doing business?

Without sounding preachy or cliche, there is no growth without challenges. I often was thrown in the deep end and my attitude has always been to say yes. I am lucky that my Faith has brought about the “can-do” attitude, I know I will be able to do it, it is just a matter of will I be willing to pay the prices and so I made a commitment to never give up.

Challenges are still many, striking a balance between authenticity and also delivering what the market desires was one. I have found a way to be true to myself and yet create compelling offers that keep the business growing.

Another challenge I faced is being recognised as experienced when I did not have any first hand corporate experience myself, I don’t look my age and sometimes, I feel the need to keep asserting that I am experienced and well trained.

Q4. Do share with our readers about your discovery period when you were facing difficulties in your business?

I have learnt to name the elephant in the room, rather than pretend it does not exist, calling it out even when I am feeling uncomfortable sometimes. This tool has helped me overcome many challenges and helped me to drop my ego, look for help and get it!

Q5. Share with our readers about your experiment period after the discovery period?

I think growth and awareness is about seeing your own limitations, and the gap between your desire and where you are, then seeing that most of them are self-imposed cages (beliefs) finding the guts to experience discomfort and be willing to put in a lot of effort and work, then coming out on the other side already stretched where it now feels effortless.

So I felt I had to stretch myself a lot, push myself beyond what I was comfortable doing and then through practice and repetition it became second nature. I am in a constant teeter between experiment and discovery, just like inhaling and exhaling. Every time I think I’m out, I find myself going into another opportunity (challenge) :)

Q6. What are your future plans? Or now what is your vision for next five years?

- Spread the Intensive Self Awareness Workshops internationally and have Residential retreats several times a year as well

- Write a Fictional Novel

- Have a TV show eventually which will be a platform for International speakers, healers, light workers, teachers….

Q7. How would you advice/suggest new entrepreneurs who want to start & sustain in business?

- Get rid of the safety net...AFTER you have put in the time, effort and energy to truly tighten your own capabilities. Your biggest obstacle will be your own self doubt so do everything you need to AND more... to ensure that you will have evidence of your adequacy, so you believe that you ARE good enough, once you get there, then get rid of safety nets and go for it. If you never stop, you will never fail. Resilience. Be clear about the overall direction of your goal and flexible in the hundreds of ways you may need to try and experiment with to get there.

- People are more important than hard cash – hence if you choose the right people , cash will just follow

- We have all read stories where the ancient Indian Kings would value their word more than their lives – this holds true in business as well

- Self reliance is an important key to happiness

5. Share with our readers about your experiment period after the discovery period?

The experiment period was akin to a trial of fire . And it was only my father and me crossing this line of fire . All the other relatives and friends were in the audience .

6. What are your future plans? Or now what is your vision for the next five years?

Our eyes are set on Venus – hence we will continue to excel to the point we are considered the very best on this planet . Only then our journey to Venus will begin

7. How would you advice/suggest new entrepreneurs who want to start & sustain in business?

- Be honest to your self

- Do not take shortcuts to success

- The ultimate goal should be happiness

- Humans and human values should precede your urge to earn money
