Ruchi Mohunta - CEO - NUTSHELL KIDS – The Walnut Club Chennai, India

Q1. How did your career journey start? Or Who/What inspired you to start this business/ entrepreneurship?

With my Honours in History and a First Class Degree in Education from Calcutta University, I was sure headed towards teaching as my profession. As a result of which I have been teaching in two of the premier Schools in Chennai. With nearly a decade in the education field I came to realise, while our schools do make our children good with facts, what we fail to create in them are Thinking and Creative Individuals.

Hence I have started my own Activity Centre which we call The Walnut Club as all activities here are designed to help children think.

Q2. Kindly share some information about your Business, products and services here.

Nutshell Kids- The Walnut Club offers a range of courses for kids between the age of 4-14.

Since I am a Licensed Instructor in Mind Mapping or in other words a Think Buzan Licensed Instructor (TLI)- helping kids to Think and Mind Map their lessons is the most popular of the Courses.

We also offer courses in Speed Reading and Memory.

Q3. What kind of challenges did you face while starting/doing business?

It is difficult to convince parents that what we need to teach our kids is being independent in their thinking. Most parents look for tuitions for their children while we believe that having learnt the skills to study on their own, they would not need any tuitions. So the challenge has been to break the mindset of the parents.

Q4. Do share with our readers about your discovery period when you were facing difficulties in your business?

There has been no difficulty phase as such. Thanks to the challenges thrown at us we are able to use creative methods to help children and adults understand the uses of being trained in Mind Mapping. It has been a learning experience for us as well.

Q5. Share with our readers about your experiment period after the discovery period?

This period is still going on or in other words – the discovery to newer methods continues.

Q6. What are your future plans? Or now what is your vision for the next five years?

Our vision for the next five years is to open as many Walnut Clubs as possible. To have more Open Workshops in Mind Mapping and other brain friendly techniques in learning as well as enhancing creativity.

Q7. How would you advice/suggest new entrepreneurs who want to start & sustain in business?

Every plan you make must be on paper. For every fear you have you also have an opportunity. Its important to take action rather than constant planning. Believe in your ability to handle all situations.

Navin Sadarangani - NYUZ

Q1. How did your career journey start? Or Who/What inspired you to start this business/ entrepreneurship?

After being tuned to the different facets of the jewellery industry and a part of 3 start-up companies in manufacturing, retail and wholesale, I went independent with NYUZ as a Jewellery Retail Service Provider in the Jan of 2005.

Q2. Kindly share some information about your Business, products and services here.

NYUZ (pronounced news) is a pioneering business enterprise in the area of Jewellery Retail Services formed with a vision “To become the Preferred Jewellery Retail Service Provider”

What we do are the 4C’s of Services where we Coach, Consult, also indulge in Creative Services and Concepts n Creations in the jewellery retail sector.

Q3. What kind of challenges did you face while starting/doing business?

As a start-up with little knowledge of running a business independently, the challenge was to keep self and small team motivated in a cause where there was little precedent. So to stick to the vision, inspite of temptation to do a lot of other things, at the cost of economic benefits was a challenge, and small pitfalls with no one to share direct burden, was another drawback which sometimes stifled you within.

Q4. Do share with our readers about your discovery period when you were facing difficulties in your business?

Since the entire idea of Jewellery Retail Services didn’t exist, and the targeted audience was largely the conservative thinking family jeweller, the essence of the business itself was questionable.

Q5. Share with our readers about your experiment period after the discovery period?

With the country's leading brand and one of the most progressive family jewellers in your kitty, the courage to showcase your abilities gets enhanced and soon all the other leading names opted for doing business with NYUZ.

It was during this phase that NYUZ was being called upon for things other than just Coaching, and this was the breakthrough that allowed for alternative streams of revenue, while sticking to the vision.

Q6. What are your future plans? Or now what is your vision for the next five years?

NYUZ has evolved fairly well in the area of Coaching and Consultancy. We have also delved a bit in the Creative Retail Services which is an area where I see large opportunity in the coming couple of years, in lieu of the contacts that we have developed in Media, Films and our client base.

This year, I also want to get some level of serious work going in the area of Concepts n Creations. Hence the vision remains unchanged, but the scope of activities gets enhanced, in line with our mission.

Q7. How would you advice/suggest new entrepreneurs who want to start & sustain in business?

Firstly, make up your mind, what it is that you are ready to lose, and for how long. Next, sit by yourself, if you're clear of the scope of work and your potential, and work on your Vision, Mission and Values Next, if you have a Mentor, share with him your plans, and use the help. Keep getting back to the Mentor every six months to review progress.

And then... there's no falling back or failing. Its just a matter of time till you taste success. People don’t fail, they just stop short before the time has come to peak.

With a Masters degree in management , I decided to acquire a hands-on skill which could supplement my knowledge. That is when I did my courses in Makeup and Hair styling. We provide group trainings to Corporates across various industries because the concept of Image management is applicable universally. Topics are Clothes, Body language, Etiquette, Grooming and hygiene, Communication , Life skills.

We also provide individual consultation to CEOs, VPs and senior level managers, Entrepreneurs.

Q3. What kind of challenges did you face while starting/doing business?

The concept of Image Management was fairly new. We had to explain the concept and talk about its importance to prospective clients.

And once they realised ( which they would have, undoubtedly), they expected immediate results.

Q4. Do share with our readers about your discovery period when you were facing difficulties in your business?

I would not refer to it as difficult period. It was more of a learning phase for me.

Mohit Rao - Mind Reader from India

Q1. How did your career journey start? Or Who/What inspired you to start this business/ entrepreneurship?

I always wanted to start on my own. Even though I had a comfortable IT job I knew I was born to be an entrepreneur. So when I discovered I had the capability & potential to be a Mind Reader, I decided to take the plunge.

Q2. Kindly share some information about your Business, products and services here.

I have the ability to read minds. My Show for corporate events contains experiments in Mind Reading, Telepathy, Hypnosis, broken glass walking, dream prediction etc. I perform a show called "SE7EN" for corporate audiences and has thus far performed for  some of the biggest conglomerates in every major city. My new Show, for ticketed audiences, is titled 'The House' is based on my personal past life experiences.

Q3. What kind of challenges did you face while starting/doing business?

This is a very unique space. So it took time to find who to sell my show to, what type of show would work etc. Over time my show improved, my presentation style improved and the Show became something that I am really proud of. But everyday we learn new ways to improve and grow. This process must never stop for anyone.

Q4. Do share with our readers about your discovery period when you were facing difficulties in your business?

I think there are no such things as difficulties. Life has lots of variables and we need to work with or work around them to make our dreams come true. Everyday brings its own learning and potential for growth. We must capture them and take steps forward towards our goal.

Q5. Share with our readers about your experiment period after the discovery period?

Innovation and experimentation are the hallmark of a successful growing company. So every day should include a lot of experimentation. Keep what works, replace what does not give the results we expect.

Q6. What are your future plans? Or now what is your vision for the next five years?

As an entrepreneur, I have a 3 month plan and a 1 year plan. My 3 month plan is to perform regular stage shows so more and more audiences can experience my Show. My 1 year plan is being tweaked as we speak, changes in our environment have led me to re think the way forward.

Q7. How would you advice/suggest new entrepreneurs who want to start & sustain in business?

Don't stop working towards your dreams. Full stop. There is no other secret. Find a way and go for it.

Varada Murthy - People First Leadership Academy

Q1. How did your career journey start? Or Who/What inspired you to start this business/ entrepreneurship?

As a student, I wanted to become a Chartered Accountant, but family circumstances forced me to take care of my Father’s small business when I was studying in College.

Although, I entered a Corporate world for 8 to 5 job and continued for about 17 years soon after my Post Graduation, I relate my entrepreneurship spirit now to the basic lessons learnt during that time!

Few important values and qualities that I picked from my parents and from my Father, in particular are Discipline, Determination, Courage, Honesty and commitment.  This, plus my exposure to multi-cultural working environment abroad has taught me a lot that is required for an Entrepreneur.

I always believed in Dreams and building something where we can contribute for the benefit of society at large, and I thought more than Human Resources, it is the Educational Services where we can really add value to people at large.  That is when I have founded People First Leadership Academy.

Honestly, School Teachers inspired me.  There is a story behind this to be told later!

Q2. Kindly share some information about your Business, products and services here.
  • Teachers Training and Teachers Recruitment
  • Certification Programs to Teachers – Integrated Teachers Training Certificate (ITTC) – ITTC-PTT and ITTC Advanced Programs, ITTC Professional, ITTC ICT
  • Workshops and Orientation Programs for Teachers
  • Leadership and Team Building Programs for Teachers
  • Communication and Leadership Programs for School and College Students
  • Personal Excellence Programs for students
  • Pre-placement workshop for graduates / Post-Graduates
  • HR Services
  • Education Management – Development of Teachers and Academic Support to Pre-Schools and Schools
  • Communication Skills Certification Programs – Advanced spoken English (CCEP & IM)
  • School Management
  • Curriculum Development for Pre-Schools
  • CCE Training
Q3. What kind of challenges did you face while starting/doing business?

With the success we witnessed in the Corporate world or looking at many other successful people, we get motivated and inspired to start our own, thinking that it would be easy.  I remember once, one of the Speakers in an Entrepreneurship Seminar saying “There is never going to be an “ecosystem” that is waiting for an Entrepreneur to show up and do his / her magic”  We need to work hard and create one for ourselves.

Well, it’s a different ball game when you are on your own, compared to working in a corporate world where you have a system in place.  Here, you need to run around for everything and believe me it was not easy for me to digest, particularly coming from a place where life was so easy with good systems in place, where customer service was one of the top priorities unlike here!  It was frustrating to wait and watch for one small thing to be moved from point A to point B!  Many a times, I was wondering what am I doing? And had to cut down my speed because it never worked as I planned and it will never work the way we think, I guess.

The first thing is that we need to be prepared to accept the reality that we need a serious long term planning as it may take longer  time than we put down in our nice Business Plan to see the positive results so until such time, we need to be prepared to sustain.  You have got to believe in yourselves and also prepare your family for that.

Q4. Do share with our readers about your discovery period when you were facing difficulties in your business?

One important thing I learnt early on is to collaborate with people to grow, we are still exploring it and we always will as we believe that it is the need of the hour for business.  Spread the idea and share it with lots and lots of people, never keep it to yourself.  There will be enough people to help. It may also be a good idea to have a Mentor or a Coach.

Q5. Share with our readers about your experiment period after the discovery period?

To be honest, our journey has just begun and there is so much to learn for us to reach where we are aiming and of course, learning never stops and it is all the more in this journey of “Entrepreneurship”.

Q6. What are your future plans? Or now what is your vision for the next five years?

We have a bigger vision to spread what we believe and do to PAN India and outside India as well.  We are looking for right people to partner with us.

Q7. How would you advice/suggest new entrepreneurs who want to start & sustain in business?

We are still young and are learning and I can only share wheat I’ve experienced so far and believe in… Always DREAM HIGH Visualise, Dream and chase your Dream.

Be ambitious, Dream and visualize bigger things for you. There are always people to pull you down and discourage you.. For me, my overseas exposure, working with multicultural work environment and putting myself into continuous learning by reading, attending various Seminars and Trainings helped me in being tough mentally.  I started my entrepreneurial learning much before I started my company to say so because while working in a Corporate, I never felt I was working for someone else; always felt the belongingness, although had disappointments on many occasions like most would have had.   I have thoroughly enjoyed my work life and no complaints whatsoever.

Nisha Jhaveri - Image consultant from India

Q1. How did your career journey start? Or Who/What inspired you to start this business / entrepreneurship?

Since the time I understood dressing and fashion, I have always admired people who are well dressed with good etiquette and a confident communication style. I was lucky to be surrounded with such people because of my dad’s business circle.

I always thought how a person’s personality changed with simple manners and confidence. It made them stand out in a crowd. I started incorporating these changes and found a new me.

That’s when I thought that people are diamonds in the rough, all they need is polishing to shine and bring out their true value. This thought drove me towards shaping my career and it gives me immense pleasure to help those who need it.

Q2. Kindly share some information about your Business, products and services here.

As an Image consultant I conduct trainings on a corporate level as well as carry out personalized client consultation on topics related to life skills i.e. Non Image Components as well as Image components.

Q3. What kind of challenges did you face while starting/doing business?

Every day brings challenges to those who dare/risk/push the envelope. Being the most optimistic person in the room will help you transcend them to your next level of greatness.

The biggest challenge for me was to find a right balance between work and my personal life. As a mother of two children, I have to see that they are well attended, nourished and educated, so in the process I have learnt to become a better planner, disciplined, a better learner and more organized which in a way has helped me overcome my challenge. If children are well sorted academically then every challenge becomes an opportunity.

Q4. Do share with our readers about your discovery period when you were facing difficulties in your business?

Like, I said earlier for women to become successful she needs a very supporting family and a very strong family background. I am lucky to have a wonderful father who taught me the basic essence of life and gave me the confidence to face the world, my children who are very matured, understanding and supportive for all my work and my husband who has supported me throughout. If we have a strong support system then I guess we are ready to face any difficulties which come our way and I am fortunate so far for having a wonderful family and a very positive and optimistic attitude in my life, which keeps me moving day after day.

Q5. Share with our readers about your experiment period after the discovery period?

Even after being an Image consultant the process of learning never ends. Now I am further trying to enhance my soft skills by joining various training fraternities.

I am interacting with more people and understanding their behavior and their requirement and focusing more on trying to become a solution provider for everyone. I am trying to interact more with children, teenagers, homemakers and corporates.

Q6. What are your future plans? Or now what is your vision for the next five years?

My future plan is to become the best Image Consultant of India and the best speaker of the world. I want to train as many people as possible and transform many lives. Helping others gives me immense satisfaction. I want to give as much as I can to the society.

Q7. How would you advice/suggest new entrepreneurs who want to start & sustain in business?

I believe we must follow our passion and take quick actions on our thoughts, and then nothing can stop us from being successful.

Set your goal. It helps you know where you are heading. Have a vision. It is the ability to see the invisible. If you can see the invisible, you can achieve the impossible.

Credibility and integrity are vital. Organizations with credibility make higher profits. It is better to be honorable than be honoured. Don’t quit. Don’t give up. Be patient, be focused, be Generous, be empathetic and keep all your modes that is visual, auditory and kinesthetic modes open and you will definitely gain success. Nothing can stop you.

Jaswinder Grewal - Personal Success Coach from India

1. How did your career journey start? Or Who/What inspired you to start this business/ entrepreneurship?

My journey as a Personal Success Coach started in 2012 when I thought of starting something on my own, where I could freely work towards my mission of reaching out to as many people as I can.

My passion towards leading a happy and purposeful life, experience, my personal power, empathy, creativity along with interpersonal skills meet the aching need of the hour today. All this and the realization that many people come up to me, confide in me and within few sessions feel the required transformation happening, inspired me to do my ICF certification to be a Coach. And then rest is history. I am fully committed to my new career.

2. Kindly share some information about your Business, products and services here.

As a Personal Success Coach I play varied roles in leadership, empowerment and personal development space. I work with individuals who wish to move forward. I empower them to evaluate their "now", see what stops them, identify practical solutions, uncover tools, take action, achieve their goals and change their story by re-inventing themselves along the way.

My methodology aims at going deeper to make the fundamental change. My workshops engage all levels: body, mind, heart(emotion) and soul, often generating transformation and growth.

My knack of understanding relationships- romantic, marriage, siblings, child-parent and
professional; support people in strengthening their relationships so they feel loved, listened to, and appreciated.

3. What kind of challenges did you face while starting/doing business?

The main challenge for a coach is to explain what coaching is all about. Marketing is another area where I struggled initially but once it started then references flowed in.

4. Do share with our readers about your discovery period when you were facing difficulties in your business?

The discovery period, when one is venturing out of the comfort zone of getting a safe pay package by the end of the month and plunging into a business can be quite a nightmare. "Am I ready?

Would I be able to get enough clients? How long will it take for me to be successful?" All these self limiting beliefs do engulf you during the initial setting up. But then, all that is required is to crack the shell of your limiting beliefs and take the step forward.

5. Share with our readers about your experiment period after the discovery period?

The experiment period that followed the discovery period was an experience in itself. As I moved forward, overcoming the challenges, I discoverd my own strengths and the more sessions of coaching I did the more I realized that this is what I always wanted to do, reaching out to people and making a difference in their lives. The need to keep the focus and taking small steps towards your goal is a must.

6. What are your future plans? Or now what is your vision for the next five years?

My future plans include creating great, effective modules for group coaching and training with a holistic approach to create a fundamental transformation that will help individuals to lead a successful life of abundance. In the next five years, I see myself as a well known coach who is sought after for her passion for a good life for all, specially the youth as they are the future of any country and if they have clarity of thoughts our future is safe.

7. How would you advice/suggest new entrepreneurs who want to start & sustain in business?

My suggestions for all new entrepreneurs focus on desirability. Come up with a vision of something that is your strength and is close to your heart and it could be road not taken by many. But the catch is to stay true to your vision.

Twinkle Tushar Thakkar - New beginning in Happiness & Wellness Coaching

1. How did your career journey start? Or Who/What inspired you to start this business/ entrepreneurship?

My career started in 1998 when I decided to guide children and help them to develop a zeal for their studies.

I was always passionate about gaining knowledge and my experience guiding children helped me to grow as a trainer by learning & teaching simultaneously.

2. Kindly share some information about your Business, products and services here.

I started training children in computer and science subjects.

Later I became an educational consultant and shared my expertise to benefit people of all ages.

Being a national chess player and software geek helped me expand my training ambitions in these two fields too.

3. What kind of challenges did you face while starting/doing business?

Back in 1998 there was no structured path for a trainer to develop his/her skill set. It was a very unorganised sector where train the trainer concept was unheard of. Even the marketing aspect was not as easy as it is today, the only publicity available then was the word of mouth.

4. Do share with our readers about your discovery period when you were facing difficulties in your business?

Well to be honest everyday is a discovery period, every difficult situation has a novel solution hidden within waiting to be discovered and acted upon. Having said this I would like to add that the most important aspect to a successful business is zero resistance to change. I had to constantly evolve according to the changing requirements of the training industry.

5. Share with our readers about your experiment period after the discovery period?

My efforts to improve my training abilities helped me grow as a technical process trainer in the corporate field. I got an opportunity to be trained by the trainers in UK and come back to India and impart this new gained technical knowledge.

6. What are your future plans? Or now what is your vision for the next five years?

My future plans involve training using my knowledge in medicine and merge it with lifestyle and thought process changes to achieve a happier and healthier society.

7. How would you advice/suggest new entrepreneurs who want to start & sustain in business?

My suggestion to start any new venture would be to start taking small consecutive steps in the direction of your goals. The fear of failure and mistakes cripples your steps and stagnates your venture. So I would advise to accept success and failure likewise and always have a standby plan to improvise in case of failure.
